GBU #1

The Good:

Webcomics are awesome.

The Bad:

The Left Behind franchise now has a video game, “Left Behind: Eternal Forces.” Description:

[Y]ou are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a Christian theocracy, and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission – both a religious mission and a military mission — to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state – especially moderate, mainstream Christians.

Uh, eek! Read the whole article… I can’t express how WRONG this game is. WRONG WRONG WRONG. Someone tell me this is a parody? Please?

There’s also an option to play as the anti-Christ, and unleash howling goat-footed demons on tasty Bible-beaters. Mmm. Unfortunately, though, there’s no option to play as, say, a freethinking Christian-type who just wants to leave well alone instead of shoving self-righteous hatred down others’ throats with the barrel of a shotgun. What?

Perhaps more disturbingly, the company producing the game is tied to Rick Warren–y’know, that megachurch magnate who wrote The Purpose-Driven Life. If anybody knows how to make a best-seller, it’s him–and Left Behind’s planning to use similar marketing tactics by distributing copies of the game through Warren’s megachurch network.

Next I’ll be hearing kids at Normandale whining, “Mommm! Why can’t OUR church have a video game??” And then in a few months the ELCA’ll start marketing “Luther The Burninator” or some other monstrosity. And then I’ll decide: disavowal of organized religion or self-inflicted lobotomy?

Actually, that’d be kinda hilarious… “I will nail these 95 theses… THROUGH YOUR HEART! RAAAUGGHHHH!”

Anyway.

The Ugly:

Jenny, don’t watch this. Or may do watch this and be warned, for this commercial’s targeted at boys your age and younger:

OOZINATOR!

If you don’t understand why this is horribly, horribly wrong… good.

Quick notes

  • Maybe it’s the fault of the construction, but the Philly airport has ridiculously bad signage. Despite having followed the arrows on the signs posted, I ended up marching through two and a half terminals before I finally found the baggage claim for my flight. Employees weren’t very helpful, either. Boo on you, Philly airport.
  • Uf da, it’s warm. But it’s still not as bad as it is back home, though–100 degrees?? That’s just ridiculous!
  • My host family seems pretty awesome so far–very relaxed and informal. I haven’t met their son Nick yet (he’s at the beach), but from the D&D stuff laid out in the basement and the PC gaming setup in his room, I’m guessing he’s a total nerd. Like most of my friends! :)
  • I accidentally missed two trains today. In a *row*. I win at life.
  • The nearest Wells Fargo is in the middle of Philly and I had almost no cash. I suppose service fees could serve as practice for currency exchange rates…
  • I just bought enough food for about sixteen lunches and dinners (plus an undetermined number of breakfasts and some fruit) for about $20. I love grocery stores.
  • Two nights ago I played with an in-progress Tryad track, Breathe, and recorded some vocals. Check it out.

Now I shall go dinnerify with the Nelson and co.

I just can’t believe it. I keep waiting for somebody to tell me that this is a hoax. Or at least hackery. But such explanations remain unforthcoming. Therefore…

Apparently, the folks defending Tom DeLay have zero understanding of satire (or sincerely believe their followers don’t). Why else would they applaud Colbert for “crack[ing] the story on real motivations behind the movie [The Big Buy, a Greenwald documentary on DeLay's misdeeds]” in an email newsletter asking supporters to contribute to the legal fund? What’s more, they posted the Colbert Report interview of Greenwald at the top of the Defend DeLay website!

The irony is so overwhelming I can’t think of a possible way to parody this. So I’ll just say F#$* THE WHAT?

Can humans really be that dense? If so, I vote for a Colbert ’08 presidential run–on the Republican ticket!

My tablet is borked.

I don’t know how, but for some reason my computer and my tablet stopped talking to each other when I came back from California. I tried reinstalling the drivers and nothing happened. Dad tried reinstalling the drivers, and I had brief “functionality” (the mouse would respond to movement, though it froze up every couple seconds) for a while. After having put compy to sleep and gone upstairs, however, it’s back to being completely busted.

I am rather frustrated. Adesso sucks, at least for the Mac. Their drivers are ugly and broken, their website is poorly designed, and their tablet is incompatible with Photoshop (well, CS2, which of course was the version we got…). The tablet functioned alright earlier this semester, and GIMP was sufficient for my needs. But now… If we don’t get these issues resolved by the time I go off to Philadelphia, I may have to do all the illustrations by hand. Which would then NOT constitute “digital imaging” and probably not count for Media Studies credit. (Also, it’d be bloody inconvenient.)

Someday I will be able to afford a Wacom

EDIT: I am an idiot. The battery in the tablet pen was dead. Problem solved…even if I still can’t use Photoshop.

Back home

For some reason, the Phoenix-Minneapolis leg of my trip had a “weight limit” lower than the weight of the plane’s capacity. The airline workers scurried around, counting the number of children on the flight so they could get under the limit and not have to boot very many passengers. I wondered, if the number of children could have that much of an effect on the ability of the plane to get airborne, why they weren’t counting the number of obese passengers, too.

Apparently the reason for the limit wasn’t that the plane was a rickety rustbucket, as we made it to Minneapolis with only a child kicking my seat and several crying babies to complain about.

I’ve flown out of Ontario many times, but today was the worst I’d seen it. As we lifted off, I saw that the entire valley was swathed in thick brown smog, with no rain in the forecast to clear it out. Yuck. I like Claremont; the colleges are pretty and green. But I don’t want to stay in LA after college. The whole star-studded, environmentally-ravaged desert thing is nice for a little while, but it doesn’t really do it for me in the long term.

As I was reminded as we finally broke through the clouds and looked down on southern Minnesota. My gosh! So much green! So many trees! I think Minnesota grew a dozen lakes while I was gone–there was water everywhere! (The recent five inches of rain the guy sitting next to me mentioned probably has something to do with that.) California is called the golden state for a reason, and even when the plants are green…they’re a different kind of green. CAM respiration kind of green–dustier, a bit yellower. Minnesota’s got the real thing.

So if the people laugh and giggle when you tell ‘em where you live
Say shh…say shh..
And if you know this is where you wanna raise your kids
Say shh…say shh..
If you’re from the midwest and it doesn’t matter where
Say shh…say shh
If you can drink tap water and breathe the air
Say shh…say shh…

(Pennsylvania’s pretty darn green, too.)

Anyway, I’m home for two weeks. We should hang out, yo!

RIAA trains police dogs to sniff out DVDs

Because, y’know, pirated DVDs smell completely different than DVDs legitimately bought. Or home movies burned on DVD. Or backup copies of DVDs you own. Um.

I like how they’re calling it a “success” even though they didn’t find shit. From the press release:

This is the first time dogs have been used anywhere in the world to search for counterfeit DVDs and the results were amazing… They were amazingly successful at identifying packages containing DVDs, which were opened and checked by HM Customs’ representatives. While all were legitimate shipments on the day, our message to anyone thinking about shipping counterfeit DVDs through the FedEx network is simple: you’re going to get caught.

Oh good. Now if I ever happen to “pirate” copies of The Orange and send them to somebody by Fedex through Stansted Airport in the UK, I know that my package may or not be opened and poked through by MPAA thugs (depending on if either of the two dogs are on duty or not) until they realize, “It’s not one of our movies.” I’m quakin’ in my boots, guys.

So…how much money did the MPAA spend to train these dogs? How much time are they wasting given that the *vast* majority of suspect packages are false alarms? Are anti-drug agencies taking notes on the MPAA’s strategy, trying to figure out how to train drug dogs to sniff out plastic bags? And how can Fedex not think that it will keep its customers happen with third parties pawing through their stuff?

This wins my award for Stupidest Security Trade-off Ever.

Random stuff

The winner of the Nebula award for Best Novella, Kelly Link’s “Magic For Beginners” (an interesting title choice, as while there’s plenty of beginners in the story, there’s not that much magic–at least in the usual sci-fi/fantasy sense), is available online here. If you’re looking for some quality finals-week procrastination material, here you go–it’s a truly lovely story.

By way of Margie, it’s a South Park avatar creator. Here’s mine:

And now three bands:
Explosions in the Sky – I’m surprised I hadn’t listened to these guys before. They’re basically Mogwai, only more so. One of the best makeout bands out there. Their website is here; if you go to albums and look at “The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place,” they have “Your Hand In Mine” (my favorite song of theirs thus far) available for download.

Paul Simon – The guy from Simon and Garfunkel. It took me a long time to realize that. Hey, shut up. Anyway, he apparently has a new album, “Surprise.” You can listen to it on his website (albeit through a crappy Flash interface…roar).

Friends Like These – Minnesota music, baby. They’re young, website-less, and unless you listen to the Current, you’d probably have no chance of hearing them. Damn catchy music, though, and it sounds like they have a lot of fun. And they named a song after me! Sort of. You can listen to “Karen” and “7th Street Queen” here.

For the non-Minnesotans out there, The Current (89.3 FM) is our public indie/local/random station. Reminiscent of college radio (until a few years ago, it *was* the St. Olaf College radio station, though then it only played classical music), only more professional and better funded.

The last ten songs played:
Ken Nordine – Azure
Wilco – The Late Greats
The Subways – She Sun
We Are Scientists – The Scene Is Dead
The Hopefuls – Whisper
Rainer Maria – Burn
Of Montreal – Disconnect The Dots
Rogue Wave – Kicking The Heart Out
Built to Spill – Liar
GST – Dancing Days

It’s basically a mix of indie rock/pop, underground hip-hop, a little punk, a little blues and folk, and a bit of just plain randomness. Perhaps what I like most about it is that it’s almost all stuff that sounds like things I listen to…yet almost all the songs are ones I’ve never heard before! (In the list above, “The Scene Is Dead” is the only track I’d previously heard.) It’s like the DJs Pandoraed my whole iTunes collection.

The Current was one of those things that I missed about the Minnesotan environment when I went away to school–along with thunderstorms, scarves, snow, Hopkins’ Main Street, Uptown, and the general down-to-earth vibe. Supposedly they have had online streaming radio for a while, but it never worked when I tried it. Maybe their Windows Media stream worked, I dunno, but the mp3 one was broken. Much sadness.

But now it is no longer borked! So I can enjoy the best radio station in Minnesota out here in ClearChannelfornia…for a week until I go home and can listen to it the old fashioned way. Oh well.

Check it out for yourself.

The Dia Sin Immigrante/May Day protests look like they were amazing. Too many pictures and accounts to post–go look it up on BoingBoing.

Well, maybe I can list a couple.

This photo is totally cute.

A pretty nice sign.

The border is a fiction!

So will immigration reform finally have its day? Or will HR 4437, the original impetus for the boycott, pass unmitigated, fueling division without solving the problem? Guess we’ll see.

And Washington, take note: When Mexican folks don’t get their way, they are willing and able to protest naked. You have been warned.
