I took these in front of Malott Commons at Scripps. I’ve seen these flowers all over southern California, but I don’t know what they’re called. Anyone know?

I know the name of these plants but my spelling for them are terrible, but here it goes anyways; they are called Bogavellians or something like that, however what I do know is that what you are seeing is not really flowers, the red colorations are actually leaves, the flowers are usually in the center and they are small and white, there are all sorts of colors ranging from red (like the ones here) to a peach color and they grow very well in southern calfornia, if you are familaur with San Diego, then go down to Anderson Nursery on Pacific HWY and they will tell you the correct name and of course the spelling of these wonderful thorny plants. Yes they have long sharp thorns.
I believe you’re looking at Bougainvillea – a woody plant used as a climber in warm climates. It can be trained to tree form as well.
