Wrong Side of Dawn is a neo-classic rock band based in New Jersey. Their sound has been described as what would come out if “someone put John Mayer and Jack White in the same room and forced them, at gunpoint, to re-write Led Zeppelin IV”. Over the last three years, I have been chiefly responsible for the band’s print and web brand for a variety of projects.

My first major project for Wrong Side of Dawn was CD cover art for their first release, a self-titled EP. Using the magic of Photoshop, I created a digital painting to make WSoD rhythm guitarist Nelson Pavlosky’s vision of an upside-down sunrise a reality.

Wrong Side of the Dawn again entered the studio and recorded a new album, ‘Stay Awake.’ Impatient to get their new sound out to the world, the band released a digital 3P—three-song EP—of three finished tracks before the rest of the album was finished. Called The Grinder’s Tale, the band asked me to adapt a promotional photograph shot by Robert Scheuerman to be the EP’s online “cover.” I edited the photograph slightly to remove distractions in the background, then added hand-drawn white curliques around the corners and text in the band’s usual font. Rose found the curliques particularly appropriate as the title track of the EP was about a poker player and the curliques resembled the patterns found on the backs of playing cards.

Finally, WSoD finished their first full-length album and had me create the cover art for it as well. After several rounds of input and revisions, the final design integrates pictures of Scheuerman’s photo shoot into a slightly surreal painting of a highway before sunrise, with motifs of spooky grey woods and headlights through fog.

At the beginning of 2010, WSoD finished ‘Stay Awake’ and prepared to release it. For this, their first full-length album, Wrong Side of Dawn asked me to not only design the CD cover but the whole CD packaging as well as a sticker and a band t-shirt.

website design:
After the original self-titled EP cover art was finished, Wrong Side of Dawn asked me to redesign their website along the lines of the EP art. I did so, editing CSS and PHP code, drawing custom graphics, and developing a sensible color scheme to create a custom WordPress template called ‘Stay Awake.’
